About Chinchikurin Sawtelle
This is HIROSHIMA STYLE OKONOMIYAKI CHINCHIKURIN.Hands down, this is the most popular comfort food of Hiroshima. Each layer of the okonomiyaki is perfectly grilled and carefully assembled on a searing teppan griddle. And when your nose is engulfed in the hypnotizing aroma of the Otafuku sauce as it drizzles over the edges and sizzles on the grill, it's easy to understand why this beloved dish has nourished generations of families in Hiroshima for decades!

Japanese and Korean restaurants often take reservations for dinner and may add a service charge for large groups; Thai and Vietnamese spots are usually walk-in and quick-turnover. Spice levels are frequently adjustable on request at Thai, Indian and Sichuan-adjacent menus, so say if you want it mild or hot. Korean BBQ restaurants typically charge per person for all-you-can-eat service with a time limit, and grills are shared at the table. Vietnamese pho shops post bowl sizes (regular or large) and a plate of herbs, bean sprouts and lime is normal to add yourself. We tried the omurice at chinchikurin sawtelle for the first time and really enjoyed it. We sat at the bar and it was cool how they cook it in front of you. The egg is fluffy and creamy and the hamburger and rice are well cooked. We tried the mentaiko cream and demi-glace and got a taste of the curry sauce. They were all delicious and paired well with everything. The omurice hamburg dish is very filling and satisfying. The shochu highball drinks are fruity, bubbly and refreshing. Definitely try out the omurice here!

For a dish as famous and popularized by anime as omurice, it is a surprisingly scarce menu item in Southern California. Until now! And I guessβ¦ only right now because this pop-up collaboration between Chinchikurin - Sawtelle and Ikura goes away on June 1st! From now until June 1st, Chinchikurin - Sawtelle has replaced their entire okonomiyaki menu with 4 types of omurice: demi-glace (classic), mentaiko, black curry, and tomato ketchup. You have the option of adding a hamburg steak as well. The shop is a bit on the small side as it sits in one of the more crowded plazas in Sawtelle. Service is also a bit on the slow side. I have visited Chinchikurin twice during this pop up event and tried all 4 omurices! The egg is cooked perfectly and oh so jiggly. They flop neatly blanketing the rice when you slice them down the middle. The hamburger steak is good too - I would get it. Now here is the Cody run-down on each of the different sauce options: Demi-GlacΓ©: Classic. Very good! If this is your first time trying omurice, you should probably start here. I would describe it as a dark, elegant gravy thatβs savory with a touch of sweetness. Mentaiko: Unexpectedly, this was my favorite! Th

I liked it. Went in the for omurice pop-up which will be there until June. Simple interior with additional seating in the front patio area. The omurice was good! Reminds me of a loco moco. A decent portion but you'll probably want an appetizer to get full. Service was good. Friendly staff. Parking lot in front or there's street meter parking.

The Okonomiyakis are very good. I do wish they put more meat in it, but thatβs just a minor issue. Waiters were great and accommodating. Crowd is pretty decent size. If you sit at the bar, you get front row seats their chef prepare Okonomiyakis.
The Baseline 9 months ago
The Baseline: For a Japanese restaurant the base Japanese ingredients (rice, soy, sesame, mirin, ginger, garlic, dashi) must be well represented, the meats must be treated well, and the environment must be welcoming. Food: The good and the bad for this one and I will say the bad is probably out of personal preference rather than the dishes being bad. The good with the lunch special was the Beef Curry and the Chicken Karaage which were prepared well and were tasty. The salad and the soup were both well done and refreshing. The bad is that I am not a fan of Okonomiyaki and I feel this is from preference in tastes and textures. I also found the sauce a bit off for my flavor profile. So I cannot rate it well but it may because I cannot be a good judge of it. I would say pass on it if you are not a fan of fish/cabbage/date-soy sauce flavor combos. Service: The service was fine the day we came but it was a little slow. My water was refilled and the bathroom was decently clean. Ambiance: This has a good Sawtelle Blvd restaurant feel to it so you will enjoy the vibe that is in a busy area.
